Exploring: The Chamber of Music

Image
The weather was warm, humid and sticky, but I trudged up the path to a building I spied through the undergrowth.  It seemed to be an abandoned temple - the roof half-collapsed - but one item caught my eye: a tomb, or sepulchre, and close by three strangely carved stones.

By dint of careful manipulation and much patience I eventually found some manner of secret code and the great sepulchre descended into the ground, revealing a chamber below.  My heart in my mouth, I descended the steps, marvelling that the room below - although a little dusty - had remained untouched by over the years.

As I reached the chamber floor music swelled to fill the space - as if some ghostly orchestra was hidden in the shadows - the music building, and building more to a most wonderful crescendo! Lights flared in the gloom and my heart swelled with a sense of well-being and love to all people. And then I saw it! Hanging in the air in front of me! A gift from the Gods of Love!

Reader, I will let you explore a…

Exploring: The Golden Bird

Image
The weather remained warm and sticky and my singlet clung to my skin as I roamed through the jungle.  Many of the animals here seem unafraid of humans, and a toucan remained obligingly still as I snapped a picture for my records.

I wandered through the undergrowth and spied a rough hewn set of steps, hacked from the mossy ground. "Mysterious...", I thought, "surely these must lead somewhere...."

Tightening my resolve I followed the path which led to a small plateau. Most curiously three small platforms encircled a larger plinth. I studied the scene for a second and thoughts came unbidden to me that I should seek two others to join me if I wanted to solve this mystery.

By chance a passing couple came to my assistance and a great mystery was revealed to our astonished eyes: a Golden Bird which, when unveiled and touched, offers a gift beyond all value!

Truly, the Amazon River never ceases to amaze!

Exploring: The Cave of Joining

Image
The weather remained warm and humid as I continued my explorations.  I borrowed one of the many little motor-boats and chugged around the riverway, exploring the nooks and crannies, admiring the jungle scenery. I was especially struck by the humming birds sipping nectar from a cascade of glorious blooms that tumbled down the cliff face.

I continued to explore and a brief while later spied a small landing-stage. I spotted a concealed entrance and went to explore.

The doorway opened to an underground chamber, and I hesitated at the sight of the many bleached bones scattered about the mossy floor.  Was this some terrible native sacrifical area?

As I explored deeper into the cave a figure emerged from the shadows. I stepped forward cautiously, checking to see if she posed a threat, and imagine my surprise when beams of light flooded from a gap in the roof above, illuminating hitherto hidden totems and highlighting the fur rug that lay invitingly in the centre of the circle.  Discretion fo…

Exploring: the abandoned mine

Image
The weather was warm and humid as I explored the jungle and I took a break to catch my breath. Glancing around idly I noticed some darker shadows, concealed behind some bushes. A few strokes of my machete revealed the entrance to an abandoned mine.

Close to the entrance some intrepid explorer had left a flashlight - I picked it up and, happily, a few glimmers of light issued forth, pushing back the shadows, so I ventured in to the tunnels.

Goodness, how they twisted and turned - dead ends left right and centre - a veritable maze!  Without the glimmer from the flashlight I might well have spent an age down there.  Soon enough however I emerged at the far end of the complex of tunnels to a broad cave.  It was a quiet spot but clearly had been inhabited for I spotted a comfortable looking rug surrounded by lit torches and - more intriguingly - a set of three magnificent chests.

Without delay I opened the first of the chests - and such a treasure was found within! I will not reveal what I…
